Miss Singapore Universe 2006

Notes:
  • This is a potentially long post. Empty your bladders before reading.
  • If any of you Miss Singapore Universe 2006 contestants are reading, just joking ya. If any offence taken, get in touch with me. I will apologize for any offence caused.
  • Check out this guy's blog on Celcom Malaysia's idea of a beauty pageant. Brilliant if you ask me! Click here for Loong's blog. I'm still laughing over it.

I'm going to be extremely fair in saying this: I don't think that any of the finalist for the Miss Singapore Universe 2006 contest is bad looking. But, I won't say any of them are extremely attractive. Of course, who am I to say. I've been told I have extremely bad taste in women anyway.

Moving on, I applaud these girls for being brave enough in entering a contest where they will be inevitably judged based mostly on looks just as good cattle is judge based mostly on their beefiness. I'm not going to be a mean bastard and talk about their looks today. They're alright and I find a handful of them attractive enough. (Note to guys: This is called 'being diplomatic'. It doesn't get you a girlfriend but it does get you labelled as gay)

Youth.SG did an excellent article trying to paint these lovelies as intelligent human beings. By that I mean that they might as well have called all the participants Bimbotic Jessica Simpson 'Is it tuna or fish' Like Sluts. To further confound the issue, most of the pictures chosen do as much justice to the girls as Gurmit Singh does justice to the Chinese race.

Quotable Quotes
Now that that's over with, let's take a look at some of the more memorable quotes by the contestants found in the article.

Juliana said:

“I hope to find a cure for cancer. Even if it’s not me, I can inspire many young Singaporean girls to find a cure or a vaccine, you never know!”

That and World Peace plus the answer to "What is the G-spot" darling. As noble as it sounds, it's been said in nearly every other beauty pageant. If Britney Spears was ever in a beauty contest, I bet that's what she'd say too (plus maybe a cure for changing breast sizes)! Next time, try saying something like "Peace in the Middle East". That'll get you votes from the hormonally charged puberty ridden sixteen year olds AND the Jews.

Yifeng said:

“Beauty is about embracing yourself and accepting whatever you are born with.”

I like her confidence already. If every girl, woman, and automobile said this, men would be with no choice but to accept women as they are and not pressure them into getting ridiculously stupid boob jobs and slimming programs. Of course, a cynic or two may argue that she's only saying that because of her boyish hairstyle and also maybe because she looks like she has the smallest cup size of the lot.

Genecia Luo said:

“I’ve got to keep to a stricter diet, stricter exercise routine, and a stricter beauty regime. Being a beauty queen is very tough for me because I’m a very laidback girl. I’m a tee shirt and jeans type of person! ... (I’ve to give up) my French fries and laksa! And my milkshake!”

No! Not the milkshakes! You're milkshakes bring the boys to the yard because they're better than theirs! Oh wait, you meant the drink. Oh, okay then. But seriously woman, you are in no way a beauty queen yet. You're still a CONTESTANT. Get that in your head. Enjoy food dammit. (Note: Notice the brackets around 'I've to give up'? It means she didn't really say that and the editors of Youth.SG had to add it in. Go figure.)

And finally...

Zeenat Nisha said (on criticism she and fellow contestants have received):

“Get up from your couches, walk to your rooms, look into your mirror, and criticize yourself!”

My dear, you are in a beauty pageant. I'm not sure which part of that brain of your's does not understand this but, you are there to be judged by PEOPLE. And a lot of those people who will be judging you and voting for you ARE GOING TO LOOK AS CAMEL UGLY AS I DO.

IF NO ONE CRITICIZED YOU, there will be NO WINNERS and NO CONTEST and NO NEED FOR A CONTEST. But I guess you just don't see that do you?

Why, if no one judged, even this woman could be future Miss Singapore Universe...

My grand aunty Wee used to be a beauty although I never believed her

And you'd love losing to her won't you? Sure you would.

In Conclusion
My pick for Miss Singapore Universe 2006 is in the picture below.

i don't really like the whole idea of beauty pageants (i may say this because i know i don't have the chance to go on stage and parade myself in swimsuits). everytime they go like, "oh, the winner has to be beautiful and intelligent" was bullshit. if they were to really judge a contestant based on their brains, a harvard-graduated would have took the tiara in a snap! those pageant stereotypes are bullshit!

Girls who r really beautiful usually don't take part in such contests, do they? That's why none of the contestants are exactly what we would call gorgeous or stunning ;p

All the so-called beautiful women have mostly gone under the same knife. That's why they all look similar. Let's face it. It's the rich that will become beautiful. Coz only the rich can afford the 'legal-daylight-robbery' prices of plastic surgeons.

cheng sim: well said mate! not to call these girls bimbos (i would think a lot of them are intelligent), but they're not judged on their brains like you said haha.

michael chua: haha that's true. i once saw this absolutely stunning looking girl on the mrt who would have won hands down but, she's not in the contest.

fairygm: beauty belongs to the eye of the beholder hehe. but yea, sad ainnit. these ppl who resort to cosmetic surgery

Well people, we all know there are more beautiful girls out there but they are not in the pageant. why? the reward is just not good enough.Anyway, singaporean girls sucks! They maybe more educated but can never compare with girls from neighbouring countries.

Hey Merv thanks for the link.

The contestants here are definitely better looking than the ones in the Celcom contest ... except for that black dude ... not sure what he is doing there. Haha~!

You are aware that Juliana, the one you say is re-hashing a quote about World Peace, has a degree in a biomedical field, and is going to do her PhD in this field at MIT in USA?

Based on that, her statement in the contest has its own meaning for her.

Its not just some random "WORLD PEACE!" statement.

As a female who is currently pursuing her PhD in the biological realm, I am rather put off by Juliana selling herself by putting down scientists in general (thus subscribing to the notion that there _HAS_ to be a stereotypical boffin type of person).

Like her quote about how 'In science, you have to look haggard and the more haggard you look, the more credible you are'. That is utter bollocks. She's a serial pipette holder who is skinny and looks presentable (everything else is styling and makeup). That is all. But I guess this is a popularity contest and you just have to exploit your novelty factor (oooh... a scientist!). But please don't slag off other people.

To dispel the myth of science and life in the lab, look no further than Jonathan Slack's book, "Egg and Ego"

So? Do you know how many morons there are doing their phD? Hell, I'm one of them! And MIT - so? It's ranked seventh in their biomedical fields for the US.

It may have personal significance for her, but I still laugh anyway. Hee. Cure cancer. Safe, easy, media friendly.

Now, if she had said "Develop a way to grow 6-headed killer mice", I would have been behind her all the way.

anonymous #1: hmm.. i'm not sure if singapore girls suck. a lot that i meet are rather nice. i'm from next door (m'sia) by-the-way and i find women in both countries much alike (i.e. confusing)

loong: haha definitely. i think the celcom one is a scam!

elias: *muaks muaks* i love you too whoever you are hahaha

anonymous #2: <your comments to be addressed in a follow up post to this&rg;

disgruntled: whoaa hang on dude! did she really say what you said she said? i only read the Youth.sg article so yea.

personally, i think scientist are cool. i dare anyone to disagree with me! *glares*

anonymous #3: 6-headed-killer mice! brilliant! but hey, we gotta give her loads of credit for going to MIT man.

duuddeee.. i so wish i could've gone to MIT. then when people ask me where i schooled, i can say "men's itchy testicles". *dreams away*

its gonna be a toss-up between the short hair girl and juliana. why? cos singapore wants the world to know that our 'beauty queens' have both brains and looks.

its like nuraliza osman, chinese version this year lah.

and yeah, i've NEVER seen any really beautiful girl participate in these kinda beauty stuff. i mean even Fiona Xie and Michelle Chia look waaaay better than them.

nuraliza was a schoolmate of mine. Between Nura and Juliana, I'd say that Nura is way better. At least Nura didn't have to sell her 'laywer status' like what Juliana is doing now.

Merv, yeah.. that quote came from the Straits Times a few days ago.

It is not difficult to pursue research in the biomedical field. You just have to be good at following instructions. Conducting experiments (especially for cell and molecular biology) is akin to following recipes in a cookbook.

And no.. its not sour grapes on my part, cos I'm a lab rat too. :)

Thu Apr 06, 05:53:00 PM SGT
Anonymous Anonymous said...

While I'd agree that it may be easy to "conduct experiments" if you're simply following instructions/protocols, it's definitely not easy to formulate novel meaningful research questions and design rigorous experiments, which you have to do to get that PhD. It also takes a long time to establish protocols which you can then follow like your "recipes in a cookbook".

Saying it is easy is a slap in the face to scientists and akin to saying anyone can achieve that PhD.

Razzledazzled: it'll be interesting to see who wins. either ways, it's a beauty contest so i figure at the end of the day, no one will care much about brains. sadly. i really wanna see a code monkey (programmer) win on day.

disgruntled: being the chaotic sonofabiatch i am, following instructions is something i'm really bad at. so a phd still baffles me. don't even get me started on why doing a Masters degree will kill me lol.

anonymous: not sure who your comments are directed to but if it's to disgruntled, she says she'sdoing a phd too. so i'd give her her two cents worth. if it's to me, simi lan?

Well... there are a lot of PHD students (morons or not) and there are a lot of beauty contestants.

How often do these two intersect?

You have to pardon her (and the rest) because there is really no time (or need) to stand on stage and give a phd/masters thesis defence.

If you're intent on being cynical (and I daresay there isn't anything bad about that in the name of humour), then well nothing they could say would ever impress you. Then again if everybody said something that impressed you, you shouldn't really be impressed.

Great stuff Merv. Maybe only the task of achieving world peace is better off in the hands of beauty pageant candidates rather than politicians.

well.. its me again...

To set the record straight... the reason I'm being critical is because she's been quoted as saying that she's _different_ from the scientist stereotype and goes on to put them down (haggard, reticent, boffin/nerd image). Other than that, I have no beef with her.

I don't think that is very fair (but hey.. maybe she's been told to play that card as her 'winning' strategy). There are loads of good looking, intelligent women pursuing their PhD in my department (Biological Science, NUS), contrary to her claims.

Anonymous after me: It really _is_ easy if you have a bio background and are inclined that way. I know whole labs of PhD students who are working on the same 'meaningful question'. Just change the name of the gene and every other protocol follows Sambrooke's "Protocols in Molecular Biology". Of course there has to be some tweaking (reaction times, vloumes etc) but every other job (programmer, mechanic, engineer) entails some kind of troubleshooting to a degree. You just have to be tenacious and put in effort, just like everything you do in life.

Hope everybody's sunday is going swimmingly.

jon: jon! any task for world peace is better off in the hands of others than the politicians!

disgruntled: no worries mate. i can understand where you're coming from. i'm a programmer and apparently all programmers are dorks to some people.

yeah, guess mayb she was trying to play some card? if so, guess can't blame her. we're all humans who beg to be different sometimes.

my sunday went swimmingly thank you!

btw, thanks for your insight on life on the phd road. i'm not sure about everyone else but at least it did kill some stereotypes in my head. but, i still believe i am below that of a master's holder's brain hehe

I agree they're not ugly...But think about it. They're supposed to be and represent Singapore's BEST girls. Best meaning beauty, talent and brains etc.
If that's all Singapore has, I strongly suggest we pull out from every competition in the future cos this is just embarrassing. Sure, maybe they'd stand out in a club or out in the street but put them up with world competition, and they'd be lucky enough to be chosen to wash the other contestants undies. If people want to debate saying that "oh you just don't understand how to rate an asian face", I'll have to bring up the question of China's booming trade in plastic surgery. The benchmark in this generation is clearly 1 with more western features. All I've seen so far are good looking hostessess that you find in some karaoke bar. You can't deny that. Now on to the question of "Smarts". Until I hear anyone of the girls saying that "Oh I just found the cure to some terminal disease." I'll say thats at least something. Anything less, I just think you're just as capable as everyone else. Nothing more.
What I think should be done...The government step in with new legislation. Have the police roam the streets looking out for all these contestants (past, future, present). The moment a hint of "lao lanness" (snobbiness) spews out of their cleavage, they'd be thrown into jail for a day or 2. Cos its just dead wrong to think that she did the country a favour by showcasing herself to the world and deserves the right to parade like a pretty poodle.

Oh yea btw.. I take back what I said about all of them being O.K. looking. I remember quite a number of them looking downright fugly. I know what I'm talking about. The one's where they look like they were born directly below the wheel of a 3 tonne lorry. Like the mother purposely chose the spot. "Ah that looks like a nice lorry carpark. I shall spread my legs under this tyre. " .. Yes that kind of face.

With that I thank you. Also thank you for the owner of this blog, I was dying to let some steam off. lol

i wholly agree with that anonymous dude. i have seen better lookin chicks on the train or bus. heck, i would not even give some of these chicks a second glance. u got a PHD,Bachelors or watever, we don't care. it's not Jeopardy, it's Miss Universe. boobs, butts and hot faces. no one gives a rats' ass on ur qualifications. if i am a neurosurgeon, but i am fugly, will i get laid just by tellin a chick i'm smart. on the flip side, if i was lava hot, with the intelligence of pond algae, it's a whole different ball game. i mean cmon people, this chicks are representing Singapore. some of them look like our SAF tanks. some of their bodies are as flat as our award winning airport's runaways. we have hot chicks on this island.but they are humble, not over confident. i'll save my arguement on our SIA girls for another day.

Thank god for this site. I couldn’t post this on their official website as i would get ban(maybe).I watched the replay last nite with mixed feelings. Miss Singapore should represent the best the country has to offer but in this contest, there is just some downright fugly chicks. Fugly is one thing, but it amuse me to an extent that it made me sick to hear that this is the best singapore has to offer. Most of them diddnt answer the question they were asked. One stands out in particular, michelle tsai.Shes just a dumb chick who had a bad hair and face day that day. She diddnt answer any question fully.Correct me if im wrong,is she the girl who answered about the sex video that came out recently? If she is or whoever answered that question, that girl should get caned as it was the wrong answer. I was just appalled by most of these girls’s intelligence. Yes most of them are PhD or whatever but these are the problem many Singaporeans face. They can memorize the textbook in and out but they cant apply it in real life and cant answer question when ask on the spot and its reflected in the show. Enough about their lack of intelligence. Now about their looks, some of them are just fugly as I mentioned earlier. There are many other hotter and sexier chicks in Singapore than this crop of girls. As soon as I saw the runner up, instantly i knew she was going to get far considering the horrible competitors shes facing. This was an eye opener for Singapore and they should build on it.

It doesn't matter how great your delegate is. she'll never be beautiful or sophisticated enough to compete against international beauty. For that reason, you only had two semifinalists. The first one, in 1983, deserved it because she looked classy. The second one, in 1987, was charity and received her placement because Miss Universe was held in Singapore that year, and sentiment was on her side. Either way, put your queen next to the new Miss USA and watch her droop, or place her next to the beauty pageant killers, the Latinas, and watch Miss Singapore run for cover. If you want an international crown, offer a Miss USA or Miss Venezuela delefate citizenship and allow her to compete.
